Tank Traps

Monday, October 24, 2011
World War II resulted in fortifications against a possible amphibious assault by Imperial Japanese forces being installed along the beach. Many of these fortifications, in the form of barbed wire entanglements and concrete pyramid shaped blocks, commonly known as tank traps, may be seen along the beach. Some of the tank traps from the northern end of the beach have been removed and relocated to near the parking area at Birubi Point in Anna Bay while most from the southern end of the beach may be found outside Fort Wallace in Stockton. Some of the tank traps remain submerged and pose a hazard to swimmers.

The tank traps on Stockton Beach only add to the unusual scenery. Along with the Aboriginal history and the fact that the dunes are ever changing makes for a really interesting place to explore and photograph.

Precious little Eme has always been ahead of the mothers group pack. While The Boss has only just started mastering a cup, she has been using one for months.

uncles roy & bill,aunty irene

I've been sitting on this photo for quite a few months. Today is 100 years since this photo was taken and 70 years exactly before my own birthday. In the picture are my Great Uncles William (Bill), Roy and Great Aunty Irene. My grandmother was only a few month old at the time, and is not in the photo. There were 9 siblings in total.

I took so many photos on our trip to Nelsons Bay. Most of them I took when I ventured off to Stockton Sand Dunes on my own. There were very high winds and my camera and I suffered for it, it wasn't a place for The Boss. There will be many more posts on the subject.

bunny girl

Mum tells me this picture of her was taken in around 1952. "Dad was in hospital after a car accident and I remember Mum made me walk through Parramatta Hospital dressed like this to visit him......shame!"

I just love the perspective on this picture and that you can see their garden and old fence behind her.

Turbulence (100th post!)

Wednesday, October 5, 2011
The sun was setting when this turbulent storm rolled over our home. It was so low it seemed like you could touch it. The clouds were swirling in the 'eye' of the storm; it was almost like a miniature cyclone. It was amazing to see how it let shafts of the sunset through the clouds. All too quickly it had moved on.
This somewhat represents my day and or life for the past week or so. Uncertainty. I spent the morning visiting my neurosurgeon for my routine check up (still no changes there thank goodness). Then spent the afternoon waiting to see my GP to get a referral to a surgeon for a new 'situation'. I mentioned recently that my husband had had a tumour that ended up being benign (thankfully). We had a clear blue sky for a few weeks. The storm has circled back around and enveloped us me again. Dramatic I know, I take this sort of stuff harder than those around me. In my mind it feels like the storm is piling on top of me like a turbulent surf with only fleeting moments to gasp for air.
